| QUOTE | | QUOTE (Chernabog @ Oct 30 2009, 08:30 PM) | | QUOTE (ecb327 @ Oct 30 2009, 12:04 PM) | That's not very nice. It's insulting to the entire Chinese race, and personally I feel insulted too. I think that comment was inappropriate.
I don't want to make a big deal, though. Just, in the future, please don't say things like that. |
I'll be flat out honest: I can't stand Asian languages in general. It's not just the Chinese, and I'm not trying to be racist. It's like all the people who say German is an ugly language, but people don't get on their cases for that. Personally, I'd take German over Chinese, but that's just me. I don't know what it is, but it's like French: I just don't like the sound of the language. I wouldn't hate a person just because they spoke the language or said they came from the country, it's just given the option, I'd rather not listen to the language.

Okay. I'm not [i]mad]/i] at you, I just thought it was a bit tactless. But I do see what you're saying. Asian languages, Chinese especially, can sound pretty harsh in comparison to English. All languages you aren't familiar with can sound alien. But people actually go out of their way to soften the sound of Chinese by adding small sounds to the end of each sentence, so a request doesn't sound like a command.
And I've never heard anyone say German is an ugly language.
Plus, let me just say something: One time my friend was joking around and "imitating" Chinese by going, "Ching chang clang chong cho" and then saying to me, "I can speak Chinese!!" I told her that that wasn't at all what Chinese sounded like and that it was inappropriate. She got all offended and said that if I imitated French (what she takes) she wouldn't get on my case. But the thing is, Chinese people were always imitated in the past, called dirty Ch*nks, and teased constantly because of their accents, etc. When they emigrated to America they were always on the bottom, viewed as scum even below the Irish and Scottish immigrants who were also disrespected a lot. However, people have never really made fun of the French. They're always portrayed as distinguished, and people automatically think of Chateaus and butlers and elegant ladies and petit fours being served at teatime when they think French. They were never on the bottom, and were regarded as diplomats pretty much straight through history. Don't you see what I'm saying? Chinese people throughout history = scum; French people throughout history = noble and on the top. So it's more hurtful to have someone make fun of Chinese than French, because it's hard to make fun of French anyway.
There should so be a debate topic on this...

Come to Canada; we make fun of the French all the time. One, they lost the war and they still insist on speaking the language (that's why the main language is English here, because the French lost). "And the French surrendered... AGAIN." Yes, the Chinese Head Tax... I know all about how the Chinese and Japanese even were discriminated upon immigration. Everyone was, just some more than others. I've heard a lot of people say that German is an ugly language. It's probably because the sounds are rather sharp and guttural (is that the word?). To me, Chinese sounds a little choppy, and I prefer flowy kind of languages. Again, I'm not trying to discriminate, just stating my opinion. Oh, and for the record, even though English is the only language I speak, I still think it sounds pretty ugly compared to some other languages

Funnily enough, you get quite a good choice of langauges here. From year 4 to year 10 you learn english, from year 7 to year 9 yo learn french, then you get a choice of two languages (English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Turkish) to learn in years 11 and 12.
I wanted to pick Turkish and Russian or German, but there wasn't enough demand for them in my school so I chose turkish and spanish instead.

Ok put it simply. Im chinese. I grow up in a chinese speaking family. Chinese is my second language. I converse with my grandparents in chinese. Ive been taking chinese since i entered school, which would be 9 years of formal education. Now you know those passages where there are blanks to fill in the correct words with? With the correct tense and stuff? Well my chinese test makes it even easier by making it multiple choice. Meaning for every blank you have 4 options to choose from. Sounds good? Well i've been averaging a 2 or 3 out of 10 for those passages. That sucks. Majorly. Trust me. Surprisingly though i got an A for my PSLE chinese . HAX!

AHA I CAN SPEEK LATINZ! |
Brava. Now do this one.
Just to show you what I have to translate...
This is last week's paragraph.
Hic alius magnus timor (O fabula misera!) animos caecos nostros terret. Laocoon, sacerdos Neptuni fortuna factus, acrem taurum as aram in litore mactabat. Eodem tempore serpentis fugiunt, petuntque perfugium in arce Minervae acris. Quod Laocoon in equum Minervae hastam iecerat, nos putavimus eum erravisse et poenas dedisse; veritatem acerbam nescivimus. Portas paterfacimus et admittimus istum equum in urbem; atque pueri puellaque - O patria, O di magni, O Troia! - eum tangere gaudent. Et quoque gaudemus nos miseri, quibus ille dies fuit ultimus ac quibus munquam erit ullum solacium.
Good luck.
